No matter how much you try to avoid it, sugar is always going to find its way into your diet. The only thing you can do is try to take in the “healthiest” sugars possible. This means you want to stay away from the processed stuff.

A popular question about sugar is, “Is high fructose corn syrup better or worse for you than regular sugar?”

The answer is as follows:

First, High Fructose Corn Syrup is a poor suga/sweetner choice. Here is a little history on HFCS and some facts.

High fructose corn syrup, made from cornstarch, was invented in the 1960’s by Japanese scientists and has since unlocked a way for food manufacturers to sweeten their products for a fraction of what they would pay for traditional sweeteners such as sucrose.

High fructose corn syrup is composed of either 42 percent or 55 percent fructose, with the remaining sugars being primarily glucose and higher sugars.

In addition to providing sweetness at a level equivalent to sugar, high fructose corn syrup makes foods such as bread and breakfast cereal “brown” better when baked, gives chewy breakfast bars their soft texture and also protects freshness.

High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is processed from hydrolyzed corn starch (so it’s not completely natural) and contains a high level of fructose (which is naturally occurring in fruits and honey) and a simple sugar carbohydrate, just like sucrose. It is about 75% sweeter than sucrose, less expensive than sugar, and mixes well in many foods.

In 1980 the average person ate 39 pounds of fructose and 84 pounds of sucrose. In 1994 the average person ate 66 pounds of sucrose and 83 pounds of fructose, providing 19 percent of total caloric energy. Today approximately 25 percent of our average caloric intake comes from sugars, with the larger fraction as fructose.

Sugary foods aren’t so bad after a hard session at the gym, but look for HFCS-free products such as bars sweetened with cane juice or honey.
There really is no place for HFCS in anyone’s diet, especially for the fitness-minded.

If you put the right ingredients into your salads, you can come out with a healthy, well balanced, filling mix of greens, fruits, vegetables, and dressing that will provide needed fiber, protein, and slow burning carbs. If done wrong, you’re going to make a salad with tons of fat, sugar, and calories which will make you wonder why you’re gaining weight if you’re just eating salads.

Here are some keys to making a great tasting, healthy salad.

Use Raw, Green Food.
Kick out the iceberg lettuce and add fresh spinach to get almost nine times more vitamin K.

Add Some Bright Colors.
As a general rule, vegetables that are more brightly colored offer more nutrients. Try adding some artichoke hearts, beets, corn, and a variety of bell peppers to your salad to make it a real health powerhouse.

Avoid Those Sprouts.
Did you know that 40% of recent food-related illnesses have been linked to raw alfalfa and mung sprouts? Plat it safe and avoid those guys.

Pass on Anything Creamy.
Mayonaise based dressings are going to be loaded with either fat or sugar (or both) and are almost higher in bad fats and total calories than oil based dressings of the clearer variety with no mayo.

Switch-Up Your Oil Selection.
Pre-made dressings are loaded with extra stuff that will fill out your belly. try adding just a touch of olive oil and as much as you want of red wine or balsamic vinegar.

Add a little something on the side.
If you’re trying to get fit by eating salads like this alone, you’re going to start craving change which could lead to a junk food pigout. Don’t be afraid to put something extra alongside your salad like a nice slice of whole-grain bread.

Naked is Good.
All those toppings at the end of the salad bar are only going to stop your healthy diet in its tracks. You really can and should skip on the bacon bits, noodles, sunflower seeds, etc. Just walk right past all that.

Start Throwing In The Protein.
Lots of salad bars have protein options. Start adding all of them if you can. You’ll get filled up without downing lots of fats and sugars. Go for the eggs (try to get the whites only) chicken chunks, tofu, and tuna.

Pile-On some Freebies.
While they don’t add much nutritionally, cucumber slices, mushrooms, celery, and zucchini can help fill you up without negatively affecting your calorie count.

Add Fiber
Look for chick peas and three bean salad to add lots of fiber to your salad.

Try some of these unique dressings in low-calorie, low-carb, and low fat varieties. Don’t forget, use the least amount possible when it comes to adding dressing to your salad. Add only enough to help it goo down when you’re eating and you’ll cut out a ton of bad fats, sugars, and calories.

Wrong!

Don’t go chucking ground beef out of your diet just yet. According to a new study, a beef made hamburger can be just as healthy as a veggie burger. Scientists from Germany analyzed the cardiovascular systems of 24 adults 4 hours after they ate two different dinners: one dinner was a hamburger, the other a veggie burger, plus fries and a soda with each type of burger.

The result: Both entrees had a nearly identical impact on oxidative stress, blood-vessel function, and other markers of heart disease, say researchers. Make your decision based on total calories between your burger choices to come out with a healthier decision.

A great example of a bad veggie burger could be the veggie burger Burger King introduced back in 2002. Read about the ingredients.

Here are their findings:
The cereal eaters experienced increased levels of bifidobacteria and lactobacilli, healthy bacteria that boost immunity and guard against gastrointestinal disorders. If you’re going to down a whole bag of chips while you watch the big game, your decision of which chips to eat can make the difference in consuming 10’s of extra grams of fat and sugar and well as hundreds and hundreds of calories. Take a look at the differences between some of the popular snack chips listed below.

Herr’s Natural Kettle Cooked Potato Chips
Calories: 140 Protein: 2 g
Total Fat: 8 g Fiber: 1 g Carbs: 16 g
Light and airy, these chips were the best of the bunch. And since they’re all natural, the only things you’ll find inside are potatoes, sea salt, and a dab of cooking oil.

Ruffles Light Original
Calories: 70 Protein: 2 g
Total Fat: 0 g Fiber: 1 g Carbs: 17 g
“Fresh” from the bag, these ridged horrors tasted gritty, greasy, and worst of all, stale. Even worse: Their congealed-fat-residue aftertaste.

Pringles Reduced Fat
Calories: 140 Protein: 1 g
Total Fat: 8 g Fiber: 1 g Carbs: 17 g
Once you pop, it’s easy to stop—especially since these freakish chips melt on your tongue and taste like a science experiment gone awry.

Sun Chips Garden Salsa
Calories: 140 Protein: 2 g
Total Fat: 6 g Fiber: 2 g Carbs: 19 g
Covered in tasty mesquite spices, these zesty chips are good for you too. One cup boasts 18 grams of whole grains per serving, more than a third of what you need daily,

RITZ Toasted Chips Original
A new report from the Medical University of South Carolina states that garlic may help fight off cancer.

When scientists used garlic compounds to treat cancerous human brain cells, the compounds effectively killed off the diseased cells. In fact, you can consider garlic a stone-cold murderer: The cancer tried to use the garlic compounds as fuel, but those compounds killed the damaged cells from the inside out, according to the study author, Swapan Ray, Ph.D. “Eating a moderate amount of chopped or whole garlic may protect you from brain cancer,” says Ray, adding that chemicals in garlic may also help protect against other cancers.

Try mincing a few cloves of garlic for your next stir-fry or pasta sauce.
