Are Cowboys Athletes?
So, I am going to my third rodeo, this time in Houston, Texas, and I stated thinking about whether or not I consider cowboys to be athletes. I think I will be attending this year’s big rodeo festival in Houston with a different amount of respect.
Instead of just looking at this event as a big party or concert, I will feel like I bought my RodeoHouston tickets to see real athletes in action.
I started doing some research on what it takes to be a modern cowboy. What kind of training is involved. I found videos, like the video following this paragraph, which make it clear there’s a lot more to being a professional cowboy than learning how to ride a bull and knowing how to spit when enjoying a chew or dip. Even being a rodeo clown involves strength and endurance, as well as following a strict diet.
Have no doubt about it, when I’m enjoying myself, relaxing, having beers, and enjoying the music during the post-event concerts, I’ll be very aware I just saw some amazing athletes perform.
Do you consider the cowgirls and the cowboys who compete in rodeos to be athletes? Leave a comment and share your opinion with others.
